Took the bus on its maiden voyage, to Phoenix for my good friend Andy Flynn's wedding. It passed with...well, it passed. It seems to lose/burn oil, which I'm having checked out tomorrow, but more disturbingly, it occasionally will completely lose power and start to overheat. I think this had to do with the fact that I was using 87 octane gas when I should have been using 91, as it didn't happen anymore after I bumped up the octane. But I'll see what the guys at the Bus Lab have to say tomorrow.
Note that I've added the all-important photos section. The current gallery might not be terribly exciting for those of you who don't know Andy, but don't fret--there will be plenty more soon; the big trip hasn't started yet!

Hey Brad, how fast can that bus go? I heard a rumor that it was inching up hills at 25 MPH.
Posted by: jake at April 18, 2003 09:11 AMI hope Iowa (my home state) was pleasant!you have to be careful of the fuel pumps on old VWs, I drove a '73 bus for a few years, one trip from Des Moines to San Diego and back the fuel pump would always give out and it would need a whack and to get it going. Good luck have fun!
